It's been a long winter here in Eastern Ontario - indeed most of Canada and the northern United States are well and truly sick of it. But Spring is finally here and I've been seeing a lot of posts recently about the arrival of Spring and what that means to different people. As for me, I've been waiting for one thing which truly is the sign of spring at my house. And it came today.
It wasn't the fat buds on the trees and shrubs
It wasn't the miniature daffodils on the south wall of the house
Nor was it the rhubarb or green onions
No, it was none of these things. What I've been waiting for is that damn bird, aka the Northern Flicker, back from it's annual migration, banging holes in the side of my house.
Happy Spring.
Oh dear! Flickers can be a real pain. There was one drilling on the side of our neighbour's cottage a couple weeks ago, and it sounded like a construction crew at work.
ReplyDeleteThis year they don't seem as bad (fingers crossed I haven't jinxed it by saying that). I've found new holes in fence posts and can hear them banging on a tree - better that than the house. There is one that likes to peck at the steel chimney pipe - that sounds like a jackhammer from inside!
DeleteI have to admit, I stared at that last photo for way longer than I should have, trying to figure out what those orange blobs were.
ReplyDeleteHi - the orange blobs are expandable spray foam insulation that we used last year (and the year before that) to fix holes the bird had put in the wall. What happens is it bangs in a hole, the picks out all the insulation it finds!
